Long synopsis : Taeko is a twenty-seven-year-old Tokyo office worker on a vacation trip to the countryside, staying at a farm owned by relatives of her sister’s husband. On the way, she travels mentally back to her tenth year. In a series of flashbacks to her younger schoolgirl life, Taeko recalls the events that shaped her life. At the same time, the present day Taeko longs for a change from her humdrum Tokyo existence. At her relatives’ farm she finds herself attracted to an earnest young farmer. As the story moves back and forth between the two stories, what unfolds is a sensitively developed inner dialogue with the past. Set against lovingly and beautifully rendered scenes of rural Japan, Only Yesterday is both a voyage of self-discovery, and a commentary on some of the things that have been lost in the human rush towards progress and prosperity.
