Long synopsis : 27-year-old office worker Taeko is going on vacation in the countryside, staying at a farm owned by relatives of her sister’s husband. On the way, she travels back mentally to her tenth year. In a series of flashbacks, Taeko recalls the events that shaped her life. At the same time, present-day Taeko longs for a change from her humdrum Tokyo existence. At her relatives’ farm she finds herself attracted to an earnest young farmer. As the story moves back and forth, what unfolds is a sensitively developed inner dialogue with the past. Set against beautiful, lovingly rendered scenes of rural Japan, ONLY YESTERDAY is both a voyage of self-discovery, and a commentary on what has been lost in the human rush towards progress and prosperity.
