Short synopsis : Inspired by the bestselling 1973 novel of the same name, this dystopian sci-fi feature from Venice-award-winning director Jennifer Kent brings a haunting and prophetic tech tale to life, a story ripe for our troubled times.
Long synopsis : A disfigured and suicidal 19-year-old woman (P. Burke) is recruited by a powerful tech corporation to remotely control ‘Delphi’ - a beautiful but brainless ‘human body’, grown in a lab to influence the public and sell products. P Burke operates Delphi remotely from a control pod (through cables literally plugged into her brain) using a satellite connection. She is able to live Delphi’s glamorous life ‘virtually’, feeling everything Delphi feels as if it was happening to her directly. As Delphi’s fame grows, P Burke becomes addicted to ‘being Delphi’. She begins to lose touch with reality, blurring the line between herself and her artificial persona. Until her obsession leads to a spiraling tech psychosis with tragic consequences.
